Thanks for visiting our Action Center, where you can take concrete steps toward protecting Nevada’s wild heritage.
Protecting wilderness is exciting for lots of reasons—beautiful places,
interesting people, and fascinating wildlife, to name a few.
Its also one of the best ways for us to participate as citizens in our
democracy. Because wilderness must be designated by Congress, it takes
lots of work from lots of citizens like you to make sure our democracy
is working.
Whether it be attending an agency meeting to voice your concerns for
wildland protection, volunteering in the field, or writing a letter to
your elected official—this effort is critical to show elected officials
that Nevada’s wilderness-quality public lands deserve the very best
protection for lands and resources that belong to all Americans. And
remember, knowing what needs to be done is not enough--we need to act!

Gold Butte: Nevada's Piece of the Grand Canyon Puzzle
Centered
between Arizona’s Grand Canyon Parashant National Monument and Nevada’s
Lake Mead National Recreation Area is Nevada’s piece to the Grand
Canyon puzzle. Gold Butte, in the far southeastern corner of Nevada,
for long a local secret, has been discovered. With St. George, Utah’s
population topping 100,000, and the endless growth of the Las Vegas
Valley and Mesquite, these growth pressures are altering this delicate
landscape. (background information )

Wovoka and East Sister Peak Proposed Wilderness
Lyon
County in Western Nevada embodies many of Nevada’s dual elements. In
the northern part of the county towns like Dayton and Fernley are
growing at unprecedented rates which makes Lyon the seventh fastest
growing county in America. The southern half of the county tells a
different story. Yerington, the county’s seat, is a small town with a
population of 2,900 and a deep hold on its rural and agricultural
heritage from a time when it was first known as Pizen Switch. Nestled
between Mason and Smith Valleys, South County as it is often referred
to by the residents, is home to two Forest Service Roadless
areas, The Wovoka Proposed Wilderness (formerly refered to as Bald
Mountain) in the Pine Grove Hills and East Sister Peak in the
Sweetwater Mountains. Both of these areas are being proposed as
wilderness. (background info )
