Once Congress designates an area as Wilderness, the managing agency will employ Minimum Impact Suppression Tactics (MIST) for fire suppression. Fire suppression, if used, would most often consist of a hand crew wielding hand tools. However, if human life, property or other valuable resources were threatened, the federal land manager could authorize using mechanical equipment.
