The Fun Theory: Piano Stairs Can we get more people to take the stairs over the escalator by making it fun to do? And do people have more fun when they think no one is watching? We’re going to see the results. (2 min., thefuntheory.com)
Year in the Desert: Anza Barrego Every desert season has its special creatures: tiny hummingbirds, darting lizards, slithering snakes, head-butting bighorns. Their land is seared by ground temperatures of 180 degrees, swept by a flash flood, even blanketed by a snowstorm. With stunning cinematography and the captivating voice of Peter Coyote, this film shows us how these creatures not only survive, but thrive. (15 min.,Chris Pyle and Nicholas Clapp)
Peter and Ben Two friends on the farm form a fond friendship fraught with frailty, frustration and an unforgettable finale… or something like that. Peter and Ben redefine what it means to be so-called "black sheep." (10 min., Penny Grylls)
Lady Bug Swarm A short, sweet look at one of the wonders of the world. (3 min., Michael Ramsey)
Missouri Stream Team Over the past 20 years, people in the “Show-me state” have channeled an unparalleled amount of energy and labor into cleaning up their streams and rivers. We’re talking 80,000 volunteers organized into 4,000 stream teams (with a circa-1985 John Ashcroft among them.) (18 min., Jim Karpowicz)
Garbage Angels Could there be life in a dump? The answer is yes if you possess the imagination and far-out vision of Canadian film artist Pierre Trudeau. (6 min., Pierre Trudeau)
Brower Youth Award – Diana Lopez This film features the inspiring work of Diana Lopez, 20, of Texas, who created an organic food source for San Antonio and works on environmental justice initiatives, from clean energy to military contaminant clean-ups. Lopez is a recipient of a Brower Youth Award, which was established by Earth Island Institute to honor legendary environmental activist, David R. Brower and to call forth a new generation of leaders. Lopez answered the call, and then some. (5 min., produced by Earth Island Institute)
Get up Stand Up Surfing in Wyoming? These guys make it look easy. (4 min., David Gonzales)
The New Species In this expertly crafted stop-motion animation, an insect must engineer a daring escape for a fellow insect (who has a penchant for wearing wigs and carrying a picnic basket) captured by a bug collector. (10 min., Evalds Lacis, Maris Putnins)
Nourish What we eat, where we eat, and how we eat reveals much about our relationship to food. Today, more than ever, we need to understand where our food comes from and how it reaches us. This film is a visual feast of all things delicious – and, well, nourishing for the body and community. And that Michael Pollan is just one of the smartest dudes around. (26 min., Kirk Bergstrom, Linda Davis)
