The Nevada Wilderness Project has been the beneficiary of two special events lately – both were screenings of excellent independent films held in Reno. The first one was called “AK the Hard Way,” and showed Oct. 13 at the Patagonia Distribution Center in Reno. Director Duane Kubischta was here in person to introduce his film, which is about three ski-friends and their dog companion who decide to embark on a memorable road trip and backcountry ski journey to Haines, Alaska. Duane’s been making ski films for about three years now; they have been accepted into several film festivals, including the Banff Mountain Film Festival. Thank you Duane, and we hope you keep on making movies! (Learn more at www.adventurefilmworks.com) Our thanks also goes out to Patagonia’s Andrew Marshall for hooking us up with Duane and organizing the event. Beer donated by the Great Basin Brewery in Reno rounded out a perfect after-work event. Ron, the owner of Ceol and a backcountry skier himself, organized the event. He and his staff did a heroic job of serving up drinks to a full house. We raffled some gear from Mountain Hardwear, REI, Patagonia and others, lots of t-shirts, Wild Men of Wild Nevada calendars, and one lucky guy took home a pair of Black Diamond skis. Wa-hoo! Our sincere thanks goes out to everyone who organized and came to these two events. Wilderness protection in Nevada needs lots of supporters like you – and who said it couldn’t be fun? Again, thanks to one and all – and we hope to see you at the next one.
